When Fey placed the machine in his shop, it was an immediate success. Finally the people had something with which to pass the time. However, so great was its success that people began to come to his shop only to play the slot machine. When he saw that the machine was so popular, then Fey decided to make more slot machines and sell them to the casinos.
However, at first the casinos were somewhat skeptical of the new ventures. They did not see how the slots could compete with the older, more established games like poker and blackjack, which were always the casinos' biggest runners. In any case, they bought a limited number of slots and placed them near the games. They hoped that, at the most, the machines would aid them in minimizing the lines at the other games.
Great was their surprise, however, when they saw that the slot machines were proving far more popular than they had ever imagined possible. There were lines forming at them, and the other games were left alone. This trend continues to this day, yet no one see the slots as mere fillers any more. In the big Las Vegas casinos you can see rooms full of the contraptions, with some one in each and every one of them, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
